The trays are made by women who grow their own sisal plants, extract the fibers, and then hand-dye and weave them into trays. The design of the baskets is exclusive to Reuma, combining geometric minimalist shapes on natural-dye trays.
Sisal is a species of Agave, native to southern Mexico but widely cultivated and naturalized in many other countries. It yields a stiff fiber used in making various products. Sisal fibers are cut from the plant with a machete. The sisal fibers are then either left in their raw state or dyed with natural, eco-friendly colors depending on the design.
